Banner & Manifesto

'Jaylene, Munazza & Ashley's Society

Our flag symbolizes strength and unity within the group. The infinity is our symbol of unity and the bear signifies our strength. As a group we vow to always stand by each other with strength and unity no matter the consequences or circumstances.

Living in any place where you have to fend for yourself you must be fair. Don't harm others, but still defend yourself if it gets to the point where you have no other choice to do so. Treat others with respect. Respect another persons territory and always be cautious of your surroundings and the people around you no matter where you are. Always protect those who can't protect themselves like young children, infants, the elderly, and disabled. Always stand your ground and look into the best interest of yourself and the people around you and in your group. Always try to make the most rational decisions and last, but no least always make sure that you and your group have some source of nutrition which would be to try to make sure that you and your group have some type of ration of food.

Manifesto

A rule that i would have in my society would be most importantly to stick together, I feel that when people come together they can overcome anything, but once they fall apart as a unit, it becomes tricky to get things done. In the society i would demand that the people be respectful to each other and not wish harm against them. The manifesto would be straight to the point, i feel that we all have the same goal in this society so there shouldnt be any hidden agendas. In this society we should remain strong and remember no one person is better than the other, we all have special talents that can help us get by.

Survival

I feel they were interpreting repairing the city great with each other, but one i most agree with was Teching Hseih, i agree with him the most because its something that most of us agree with. In a way, we all wonder how we would behave if we were homeless, or fell on hard times but we would never know. He on the other hand went out and experienced it for himself, and documented what its like. He experienced the strength it takes to be able to make it in the world.

Curating

Gregory Gentert: Pigment Print
 Ben Hagari: Video, Green room

i feel these two were placed together because they kind of show the organic way of life, and then a face paced way of life we are familiar with, they contrast each other.

Near and Far

Mainstream:
Edgar Degas
First Arabesque Penchée

cast in 1920 from a wax sculpture
Bronze
  • The audience i feel its attraction is woman mainly, i feel that way because he is showing that he understands and appreciates what our bodies can do.
  • Its bearing witness to what we can do, and the things that the human body can accomplish.

Non-Mainstream:

Africans of Western Africa
Bracelet, 17th–19th century
Nigeria; Yoruba, Owo subgroups
Ivory, wood or coconut shell inlay
  • I feel the audience of this piece is for people that aren't familiar with the west African culture.
  • This is bearing witness to, the traditions that they participated in during special times and wanted to show the types of things that they wear, that they're similar to us.

The differences between these two works aren't much, they show that both the traditional man and nontraditional both appreciate art and know how to express it. I dont feel they were familiar with each other based on the fact of the cultural differences. I think they both deserve to be mainstream because i think it is important for us to know about everyones culture and understand what they go threw.

My life in Food

The dish I choose to cook for this project was shrimp Alfredo, I choose this because since my family members have sworn off beef and chicken, we have been eating more and more seafood. its also my favorite dish.

the ingredients i used for this dish is

  1. garlic
  2. Alfredo sauce
  3. linguine noodles
  4. shrimp
  5. salt, pepper, sazon, and other seasonings.
  • The first thing i did was start the sauce because it being out the jar, i had to fix it up so it wouldn't be that noticeable (my aunt would kill me for using jarred sauce). i started that with some garlic and seasonings.
  • Then put on the noodle to cook because knew the shrimp would only take about 8 minutes.
  • Towards the end of the noodles cooking i started marinating the shrimp in the seasonings and then when the noodles were finished, i started cooking the shrimp.

i added the last picture to show it was me :)

Food as a Metaphor

  1. In my opinion i feel that it relates metaphorically to food as art because usually when you go to an art gallery, you view these sculptures and paintings and you visually take them in, and then days even hours later they forget about what they experienced. As when actually consuming the art work and having it come out their body they take it inside visually and they digest it and they see it days later (ew), but with that aside, I always remember what I've eaten.
  2. The connection between Post WW-II and canned soup was that we became disconnected to the culture of growing and making food and also bonding bonding together making it. It showed we strayed from that and went to the instant canned goods we were familiar with.
  3. I'm not sure how I feel about baking bread as a political act, but i understand where that if we don't know what goes into our bread and food as we don't know what goes into the decision makings in politics and the government that we are in, we truly are lost.
  4. I feel both of the pieces are meant to empower someone, The last supper is to show Jesus and his disciples around the table gathering for what is to be known their last meal, The Dinner Party also gives us women a place to be in history where we've been forgotten.
  5.  Rirkrit Tiravanija took advantage of the food as art experience in an amazing way, not only cooking to bring people together and showing them the art of bonding threw food, he also took the opportunity to give people knowledge about his culture.

Hw Blog Assignment

One skill that I have learned from my family is doing hair, my great-grandmother taught my aunts and grandmother, and she taught my mom and my sisters. Growing up around majority of women around me, it was easy for me to pick up and learn. Now its my responsibility to do my niece hair when my sister can't do it, and do my cousins also, because growing up I had someone doing it for me. If i had to convey this in an artwork, I think I would display it a local block fairs and festivals throughout the NYC area. The materials I'd use would be products that I've used in my life, and things that I would hope to use in the future of doing my and my families hair. I'd display styles that I know to do on Mannequins and display pictures.

Lecture Questions

  1. The piece that Antoni worked on, symbolized all the people shes encountered her life and linked them together. It is pieces of material given to her by people close to her and other materials that were dear to her heart, making the rope making process even more sentimental. Each part of the rope is sectioned, that way the story is clear that is attached to the rope and gives it more meaning.
  2. I think that what Janine Antoni is trying to get across by showing both of the processes is that we never know what we ourselves are capable of. We have to be willing to learn and test out our dreams to really be complete in our adventures.
  3. In my opinion, I think they would understand. The way she shows the process of using her body in her artwork makes it easy to understand that things have greater meanings when they come from you.

Moma Review

Dynamic Hieroglyphic of the Bal Tabarin
Gino Sererini
Oil on Canvas with sequins
1912

  1. I feel like the painting is representing the fact that even all messed up and disassembled, we can still see the beauty of things. And it may not be forefront but all things have unique qualities of them. For instance, when I first saw this I didn't like it, but the more I stared at it, I loved it.
  2. Verbal supplements such as the words bowling, and a woman riding the scissors, also people to be what appears dancing and having fun.
  3. The painting was made out of oil on canvas with sequins placed on it. it was very detailed and the pieces strategically placed in a way that we can still understand the story.
  4. The content of the painting I think is the story of maybe what he experienced in his life, using the bright colors.
  5. In the scale aspect of the piece, it looks as if, it was mounted on a table and he stood over it very closely to get every piece right.
     7. The context of the work of this piece in my opinion that our minds are just as complex and this painting, that we can comprehend anything we want to, just depends on how out minds process it.
     8. From this time period I've never seen an artwork like this, its very modern in a sense, but also very conservative to ones culture.
     9. I don't think this piece is very traditional.

For some reason I don't feel the other questions don't apply, I would like to further discuss this in class.

Beauty

Part A:

It relates to human beauty by showing that many things go into being a woman and how we represent ourselves. And no mater how we are portrayed we will still be a strong and united species .

One of her works called " suspended playtime", is one that functions formally by just being created out of everyday mediums and still created with a message. At first one would think this is ugly because it's just made out of garbage and recycled things, but  It is a beautiful piece because it signifies the common language that all cultures share that shows we celebrate many of the same things , in this case as football.

Part B:

The one thing I absolutely hated about this picture was how dark I thought I was. My cousins were all light with nice hair, my sister had good hair, and there I was the little dark skin one with nappy hair tagging along. I know for a fact that the happiness in this picture was forced because when I was this age I was very unhappy being the youngest and being picked on.

I know now that me as a person has changed and emotionally grown a lot. now when I look at this picture I don't see the skin that's darker than everyone around me, I see a little girl who's still growing.

Change .

Question 1:
I tried to think of something about me that I wanted people to know about me , but I'm pretty much an open book, but some would never know because of my quiet exterior. That's not because I am a mean person, it's really because I am a little shy, but once i come out of it I really am a fun person. There are many things about me that people don't know, I like to joke around and go out and I loveeee to debate, when there's something I'm interested in, I gather all of my knowledge on it and learn more and will talk about it for hours. Another thing I'd like people to know about me is I love to talk and help people. When I get older id love to get into the human services field and help people get to where'd they like to be in their lives.
Question 2:
If there was ever something I'd like to bear witness too, it would be the action of getting the homeless and jobless off of the streets. When I take the train it drives me crazy and breaks my heart to see the people begging and living inside of a train station. I'd love to see the time where people become more important than animals again because i believe that's where we are in the world right now. I've seen a group of people instead of saving a homeless man and putting him in a shelter, they rush to a limping cat and hurry him to safety. This is another thing that I would like to do as an adult and even now, help change the world.
